Is it likely that Eris was married but as her and husband parted so she didn't put his name on the certificate but used her married name? I have looked at all the information i have and can't seem to find a match. I have another bit to try. Thanks Jen

Hi sorry i disappeared for a while. All in the inforamtion i have is: my grandma Myra Pauline Varker Vincent was born 1928 to this Eris Pauline Vincent. Grandma before the fall out said that her brothers are Clifford and Dudley Vincent i have ordered their birth certificates and there mother is Hilda Curtis born 1884. She also said that she had a Horace A Curtis as an uncle which if she was related to Clifford and Dudley is correct. As my grandma was adopted/given to a family member i am wondering if she was given to Hilda Curtis who later married a Sydney Vincent. I have looked into Sydney Vincents family wondering if it could be his sister but can't see that it is. The other brothers and sisters that i have been told are hers are Everett, Eldred, Beryl, Avis, Esmie and Enid but i have not ordered there certificates and haven't found some of them yet. Jen

When would Eris have been born? There's an Iris Vincent born Plymouth c. 1900 in the 1901 census. Her parents were from Cornwall.

My first thought was that 'Eris' was a mistake for either Iris or Erin. nell

Is this the family where ''Eris'' and the child were brought up as siblings? (Or was that someone else?) Does anyone know what happened to ''Eris'', or is that a taboo subject? I was just thinking that if anyone knew when she married, or when she died that might give some clues.....same goes for ay of the other ''siblings''.......getting one hard fact on any one of them (you had some names, I believe?) might be all you need to solve this........... Jennifer - have just been Googling and found this - seems ERIS is a real name, after all...and don't I feel dumb for it, seeing as the name is Greek!! LOL LOL http://messagenet(.)com/myths/bios/eris(.)html take away the brackets, as per usual.

I think that times have changed a little regarding registration, Jennifer - there were lots of spelling mistakes made on certificates back then since a lot of the time names were spelt phonetically. If they spoke with an accent of any kind then Iris could well have been written down as Eris. If the person making the registration was illiterate and had an unusual sounding name, then the Registrar would probably have spelt it phonetically. I have a funny incident on my tree where one of the sons was registered as Joe Rangall Sanger - it should have been Joe Randall Sanger (the Randall bit running through that line). We joke that perhaps his mother had a bad cold at the time she registered his birth LOL Can't think what else Eris could be, though - unless, Eris is a name in its own right. Could be some old Cornish name... Maybe someone else might know.

I might have to check and look at Ireland see what i can find. I found an Earys Vincent but she was only 14 and from Pontypridd which i think is Wales, but i have been told that they were all from Cornwall, am wondering if the family secrets are all coming out in the wash now and that is why i am struggling so much. Erris sounds Irish to me - believe it is an Irish place name? Could this be a clue to her origins? Jay

That is what i was thinking as my other family has an Iris in it but could they have wrote it wrong on the daughters certificate? I know when i registered my son you had to double check all of the spellings as it is a legal document. I will have a look for an Iris when i get back later. Thanks Jen

I've never come across that name myself before...it sounds a bit like Iris, though - could it be a version of that perhaps?

Hi i ordered my grandmas certificate and have just had a phone call from GRO to confirm what her mothers name is. They have said that she was called Eris Pauline Vincent. All of the Vincents came from Cornwall. I have been from 1900 up to 1914 and cannot find her. Could there be another way that her name is spelt even though it is written on the birth certificate like this. I think most of you know that i can't ask my grandma for details as it has caused a bit of an arguement. My grandma was adopted when she was about 1 and this is her birth mother, there is no father on the certificate as her father disappeared before she was born there are all types of different reasons for this.
