If you can wait a couple of years, the new indexes will have this information, so that black hole between 1901 and 1911 will finally be a bit easier to research.

Freebmd shows exactly what is in the original index. So no maiden names of mothers till end of 1911. No age at death in death indexes until abt 1866 or so. No marriage partner until later indexes etc etc. Don't blame Freebmd, blame the civil registration regulations that didn't have all the useful details in the indexes right from 1837 - and who didn't introduce the idea back in 1637!

Also remember frebmd is nowhere near complete. To check the full index you need to use Ancestry (the full images, not the partial index),which is still free but requires a bit of time to trawl through. Glen

... unless they were born before 1901, in which case you may be able to find them with their parents on the census. Depends on how common the name is, really. You might also be able to find a baptism record, which would give father's name and mother's first name. However, not many baptism records are online for post-1837. Worth checking the IGI (familysearch) site though - a few parishes are covered on there up to the 1870's, especially in London area.

Jackie, You have to buy the certificate to find out parent's names. Rose

I think the mothers maiden name only shows after 1911 or 1912 before that the mothers maiden name doesnt show.

Is there a way to find out? Jackie thanks everyone. You have all given me a clue. I was confused viewing the image which just gives the name of person born. Will try IGI...maybe that will help. Jackie
