Hi all, I posted about this yesterday too but I'm back again and looking for even more indepth help. I've found a branch of my family on the 1841 census. I've managed to trace three of them along to their deaths, and have roughly figured out who they're related to based on that. But one woman is still a puzzle, as it was pointed out to me that her age may be wrong. Alice Casey is recorded as being born abt 1763, which would make her about 78 in the census. This would explain why she isn't on the next one, but it still doesn't explain who she is. When you look at the image recorded though, the age next to her could possibly be 15 rather then 75. If she were 75 I would expect her to be born in Ireland. Instead all it says is that she wasn't born in Lancashire, but was in England. But I still can't find her anywhere else based on her being 15. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to track this woman down and figure out who she is? |

Oh if anyone wants to look at the image and see if they can figure out what it says, the people to look for are Hugh Casey born about 1811 in Ireland or Cathrine Casey born about 1829 in Lancashire. |

Hi, if she is registered as 15, she would be aged 15-19 as ages were rounded down in 1841. I dont know if this helps at all. Sylvia. |

Hi - I have looked at the image and from what I can see it definitely looks like she is aged 15 yrs. It is a family - husband, wife, then two daughters by the look of it - one aged 15 the other 12. If this was an elderly relative she would normally appear beneath the children of the household, so it would have had husband, wife, 12 yr old then 75 yr old rellie. But this is not the case. Also, the number 7 tended to be written through the line - check the opposite page, about 5th line down, a Robert aged 7 yrs. Now, if Alice was noted at 15 yrs on this census it could mean that she was aged anywhere between 15 and 19yrs as the ages were rounded down most of the time. So, look for births between those dates. To find her on the 1851 census, I would first suggest looking at the marriage entries from 1843 to 1847 - see if anything comes up for her, then you can search for her under her married name. Hope that's been of help. |

Thanks Sylvia, based on that there's only one person on the 1851 census that is a possible match, it would help if I could make out what her profession was listed as in 1841, as then I could match them up. |

And thanks Athena too, the trouble is that the 12 year old is listed on the 1861 census as Hugh's neice, and the elder Catherine as his mother on the 1851! I'll try your suggestion and see if anything comes up. |

Hi, I just had a little nosey on the marriages and noticed that there is one for an Alice Casey in 1852 Liverpool - could that be her? |

It's possible, I'm going to try some of the surnames on there and see if the ages match up.. |

Hi again, I looked at the image and Alice is F.S. female servant. Also Catherine appears to be 50+ so she could be his mother as he is 30+. Sylvia. |

Unfortunately the Alice that gets married in Liverpool seems to either be too young to be this one, or born in Ireland when the census here says born in England. There is an Alice born in Kent who could be the right age, and working as a servant too in 1851. Unfortunately none of this answers the question of how she is related to Hugh and Catherine, who were respectively unmarried and widowed/too old by then. One hypothesis I'm currently..umm.. hypothesising, is that she was Catherine's (age 12) sister, and for some reason was living with her uncle and grandmother. Who her parents were, if they lived in Ireland, may be impossible to know for certain. |
