I am trying to decipher the occupation of Edward F Sampson,( b 1848) in the 1871 Census, then living in Bowden, Was he a senior student and Maths something at Christs' College, Oxford Are the underlined letters following this 'J B a ' ? & if so what could this mean? Any thoughts much appreciated Joan

Could the Sec be 'second' and could the B a bit mean Bachelor of Arts can't work out the j Simone

There is also an Obit in the Times 4th Oct 1918....this tells you all about him! Merry

Thanks everyone for your help - My relative is not actually the evidently highly qualified Edward Sampson, but Lydia Webb, the servant!!! - I was just fascinated to try and find out what sort of household she worked in. Merry, however did you find that obit so fast? Joan
