Her Indoors

William Morley c1806 married Mary Stanhope/Stenhope on 31 Aug 1822 in Sutton in Ashfield, Notts. They had a son, George, baptised 20 Sep 1823 in Sutton in Ashfield. He had several children, two of whom married my cousin Samuel Blood. William Morley (possibly the same one?) married Elizabeth (Betty) Blacknall on 29 Mar 1826 in Calverton, Notts, and their granddaughter, Rebecca c1869, after being widowed, also married Samuel Blood (the same one), sometime after 1914. I have readily found the Wm = Betty household in 1841, but I am looking for any evidence of the death of Mary Stanhope or the marital status of William at the date of the second marriage, but I am stumped. If it is the same William, then my cousin was a little 'unconventional' in his choice of marriage partners, but I don't know how to make progress. Does anyone have a database of Notts burials, or weddings that might contain more than I have found in IGI? I'd be very grateful for any help.

Some facts need clarifiying first. How many children of William/Mary married Samuel? There are less than 4 years between the 2 William's marriages. Presumably Samuel was born 1820-1830, and he married after 1914? Are you sure its the same Samuel? Helen

Samuel married Emily Morley in 1876, and her sister Alice in 1886. It was third time around for Alice, she had previously been twice widowed, having married John Hallam in 1867 and Amos Stevenson in 1883. I'm fairly sure about the third marriage, but Rebecca Beardall, daughter of Harriet Morley, William's daughter and possibly sister to the first two wives of Samuel, was also a widow, having previously married John Wright, by whom she had at least two children. It's very confusing.

The marriage information you've found for William on the IGI isn't extracted from the parish registers, but submitted by members of the LDS church, which means it isn't necessarily reliable. Your best bet is to view the appropriate parish records at your local LDS centre.

I have found a Mary Morley who was buried 12 Dec 1834 aged 34 in Sutton in Ashfield on the Nottingham Burial cd. Unfortunately it does not stae if she was married or not. Wendy

If the children of the first marriage overlap the second, then there must be two Williams, and while there may still be a family connection (I shall have to look further) the more bizarre marriage to two sisters + niece is a red herring. Thank you to everyone who has replied.

Helen Yes, they were the daughters of George Morley = Elizabeth Gee. Emily died in 1884, having produced two children William b1878 & John b1880. In 1886, Samuel married Emily's elder sister, Alice, who produced two further children, Martha b1886 & Arthur b1893. In turn. Alice died in 1914, and Samuel married a third time, a widow, Rebecca Wright (nee Beardall), whose mother was Harriet Morley, whose parents were William & Elizabeth Morley. So if William was ALSO the father of George, by an earlier marriage, then Samuel got three bites at the cherry, the wag, but it rather looks as though any family connection is more remote (if there is any at all). But it is interesting!
