I'm sure this question has been asked before but I cant find any previous threads. I know my great grandfather James Robert David Barnes served in the WW1. But I dont know his rank or where he fought, does anyone know of any website that would be able to help me? I know he survived the war, but would like to find out more information about where he fought etc. Any help gratefully received Thanks Claire

Hi Claire, Try this website http://www(.)1914-1918(.)net - remember to remove the brackets. That will take you to their home page which has loads of useful information and from there you can click to go into their forums page. I joined up with them on Weds eve and their members are just as helpful and friendly as the ones on here, by a couple of hours after my request I had all the info that I needed. Good luck. Donna x

First port of call for you will be the Medal rolls on the National Archives site.

Here's a likely candidate: Description Medal card of Barnes, James R D Corps Regiment No Rank Royal Garrison Artillery 78875 Gunner Date 1914-1920 Catalogue reference WO 372/2 Dept Records created or inherited by the War Office, Armed Forces, Judge Advocate General, and related bodies Series War Office: Service Medal and Award Rolls Index, First World War Don't get too excited yet though, there are dozens of James Barnes on this site, though he is the only James RD Barnes.
