Hellooo Bit stuck, again!! I have the above lady appearing in my tree as she married Young Sunderland in Halifax in 1886 and I have foudn them both in 1891 and 1901 and I've got her in 1881 as a servant in Sheffield. But I cant find her anywhere before that and I've trawled 1860 for her birth record but cant fnd it anywhere. From the census info she was born in Dronfield. Can anyone help please? thank you Rebecca x

Is Harriet consistent about her birth year? Have you checked 1st quarter of 1861? Have you looked for all Harriets born Dronfield, or for a baptism on familysearch?

Hi Helen Yes I've checked the 1st Q of 1861 too and shes not there either, shes 21 in the 1881 census and 31 in 1891 and 41 in 1901 etc. the only thing family search brings up for her is the link to the 1881 census where shes a servant and nothing else. Stuck stuck stuck stuck :o(

Arithmetically the most likely year is 1859: i.e. April 1859 to March 1860. How about this; Name: Harriett Anne Damms Year of Registration: 1859 Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep District: Chesterfield County: Derbyshire Volume: 7b Page: 529 Christine PS - I haven't looked at those images - could be wrong? PPS - If there are mistranscriptions, it would be helpful if you use the reporting option so that future researchers stand a better chance! I found the info by looking for HAR* DAM* born 1851±1 born in Derb*.

The trouble with unusual names is that neither enumerators nor transcribers seem to believe them! Found them in 1851... I hope you don't mind my trampling roughshod through your puzzle - I just enjoy puzzles and get a bit persistent when it intrigues me -as yours has done. I've had a go at finding them on 1837 in the 1861 census. I would say that, unless the transcription is incompetent beyond belief, that household isn't there. I've tried pulling up individuals and got nowhere, even without the surname - there's nothing likely so far. There's no Thomas, 10, or George, 40, in Dronfield; no Isabella there at all, or Agnes/Agnus or Harriett (or Harriet, 1); and the only Marys, 38, I can find are Johnson or Whitworth - neither of which resembles Dammy. All those with no surname or PoB selected - just the parish of Dronfield (which does seem to have some residents, according to 1837). Do you have access to Ancestry? Christine

Is that surname a variant of ADAMS? It's the sort of thing that happens to words - including names - when letters are swapped round or dropped from the beginning (or added on) - like (n)orange (think Spanish naranja), or horse (hross, in older German) I'd say it was worth keeping in mind as a possibility, unless you're very certain that it isn't.
