I have an ancestor Thomas Martin Little who worked as a merchant in the 1900s-1920s. I have found passenger list records which have told me that he travelled a lot as a merchant to America in transit to Manila in the Philippines and Kobe in Japan. Found him in the trade directory for Newcastle upon Tyne in 1910 and 1914 but I could only find him in the private residents part and under the street directory part, it did'nt give his occupation. Any ideas how I can uncover who he was working for and what he was selling? Have not found him in 1901 as yet but that will hopefully change when his marriage cert comes next week. He was born 1870 in Alston, Cumberland. In 1891 he was lodging in Newcastle aged 19 and was a commercial traveller. George |

I guess he could have been away on his travels at the time of the 1901 census. :-( Anne |

George Have you searched for his name on a2a (www.a2a.org.uk)? My grandfather worked for a Manchester firm selling cotton spinning and weaving equipment, mostly abroad, and there are a lot of papers from the firm deposited with the Archives, which showed up when I did a search against his name. One day I will get myself over there and actually read them! Tina |

Considering the area he lived and the places he went to, does seem likely he was in the cloth business. He may have left a will? |

His marriage certificate has helped me locate his wife & kiddies in 1901 residing with her parents in Swansea but my guy is nowhere to be seen. I guess he was overseas. Turned out when they married her father was a shipping broker and by 1901 a manager of a patent fuel works. So I suspect my guy was involved in this business too. |
