Are they going to keep this census, then? I thought Australian censuses were destroyed after they'd extracted the statistical information. |

Mary, this year question 60 asks if you want the census kept for researching in 100 years. If you don't answer it, they count that as a 'no', so I've emailed everyone I know asking them to answer 'yes'. However, with relationships the way they are, pity help anyone trying to research then. Apparently on the last Oz census there were over 40,000 who put their religion as Jedi. |

hmmm, they've given us a little box to tick this time in regards to keeping them for future reference. Guess it will be a majority rules thing. |

From http://www.aigs.org.au/census2006.htm The Census Time Capsule will be conducted as part of the 2006 Census and each person in Australia will have the opportunity to indicate on the Census form whether or not they want to be part of it. People can elect to have their census information along with their name and address kept securely in a vault by the National Archives of Australia for 99 years. In the year 2105, the vault will be opened and the 2006 Census information for people who agreed to be in the time capsule will be available. This will help our descendants trace their family trees and will be available for any other research purpose. The Time Capsule has the support of the Parliament and many other bodies, but participation is optional. Identifiable census information will only be included in the time capsule for those individuals who specifically elect to be part of it. People indicate their intentions regarding the time capsule at the end of the census form. If you tick no, leave the question blank or don't sign the form, your name and address will be destroyed once processing of your form has been completed. It's afternoon here on the sunny SE Queensland coast but no sign yet of our census forms. Hope the forms arrive before we set off later in the week on our annual drive to Cairns. Don't know where we'll be on census night which could make it an interesting process this year. Thanks to Ancestral Phylacine for including that info re the Time Capsule. Will definitly tick the Yes box and hope some family connection will go looking when the info is available. K |
