I've got some photos of the battlefields around Sevastopol and Balaclava, including the 'Valley of Death', which I'm happy to send to anyone interested when I get back (which will probably be in about a month).

Hi Michael, Yes, I had a great great uncle who fought at Crimea in the Coldstream Guards. He won a Distinguished Conduct in the field Medal. Shall I PM you my e-mail address? Cheers, Horatia

My GG Grandfather Joseph Jacques fought in the Crimea War. He was presented with a Crimea six bladed Pen Knife which is inscribed on one side ' PRIVATE JOSEPH JACQUES BALAKLAVA, INKERMANN,SEBASTOPOL ' and on the reverse side 'PRESENTED TO THE CRIMEAN HEROES OF THE ?(?th) DRAGOON GUARDS BY THO(s?) JOURDAN SHEFFIELD' The inscription is not engraved but in a kind of metal print on a dull metal background. There is no regimental number and I believe that Pte Jacques was promoted at a later date, maybe to Sergeant. The knives were presented to the officers and men of the 4th Dragoon Guards who served in the crimea. There were 225 presented. Manufactured by the Wostenholm firm of Cutlers, the knives were six bladed and the inscription as you have but Fourth Dragoon Guards. Thomas Youdan was a local music hall proprietor who was reported to have paid £100 for the presentation set. Unfortunately this knife is in the possesion of another GG Grandchild, so a photo of the troops would be great. Will PM with my e-mail address. Wendy
