Contact through Hot Matches

It would be very time efficient and finger-tip saving, if there was a tick box in the Hot matches window to simply allow contacts to view each other's trees. After opening, reading and replying with polite little messages to forty thousand Hot Matches who just maybe (but usually are not) a distant cousin, I have no time left to simply browse through GR and read about what else is happening out there. I wouldn't want to allow access to my tree to all unrelated people in this way but I wish they would change the list so it shows the name/birthplace of the supposed match without us having to click on the match each time. Then we could see at a glance that they were born at opposite ends of the country/world!

Bit of a dangerous way to go if you ask me,but if you wanted to you could enter your tree on Ancestry and everyone can look through it without asking, they can of course then copy the details as they see fit. The new(?) feature is not a World Family Tree,it is a simple tree builder.Rellies born less than 85 years ago are hidden, but everthing else is considered fair game. Glen

Leonie, why are you replying to all the hot matches? Surely GR send them to you just to let you know of other trees with the same names.(sometimes) The contacts themselves don't send you the names. If I contacted all the Hot Matches I would have no time for anything else. Or do you mean people who have contacted you? Jean

This isnt the first time that I have realised that there are people who think they have to reply to each and every hot match. In fact, one person who wrote to me with a 'my person came from another country' got very sarcastic with me when I tried to explain that I hadn't contacted him and he didnt have to reply to them all. Kept saying it was only polite and its thoughtless not to contact people when they have sent you a hot match. I gave up. I certainly wouldn't want all and sundry seeing my tree and if GR ever try this then my tree comes off this site immediately. In fact I have now stopped having hot matches. I changed the setting in 'my details'. Anyone who I had anymore than one match with, I had always had prior contact with anyway. Margaret

I blocked Hot Matches too,now i search 'my tree matches' about once a month, just using perhaps a couple of surnames that happen to be of interest at the time. Did you know the most common surname on GR?It's the family called 'Unknown'. Never found any of them on the census but there are hundreds of thousands of them on here!! Glen

Wow, all the replies! No, I don't reply to all of them but it's tempting. So many seem to be possibles, especially when there's no birth place listed. Otherwise, I'm new here so I didn't realise I could go to 'My Tree Matches' maybe that'll slow things down a bit. I guess I'll learn all the short cuts as I go along. Thanks all for the hints. Leonie :-)
