Hi Portland Rose - thanks for letting me know about Lilian Edith - drat! but at least I haven't wasted money on a cert. Afraid I don't know when she died. I only have one living cousin old enough to have some memories she's given me quite a bit but some is slightly out eg married Aug 1900 when it was 1901. That does mean that Lilian's Sept 1900 birth might be wrong. Also it was convienient that, in her memory, they married a month before the first child was born! I am about to go away for a few days so won't be on the board but thank you for your help, and everyone else who has offered suggestions. Thank you.

Jo, Do you know when Lilian died? Might be best to work backwards. I would expect Henry to have been born a bit more than 12 months after Lilian. Rose

Jo, I found Lilian Edith. She's with parents Charles and Jane so not the right one. Rose

Jo The Sep that is quoted means the July-September quarter. Each year is split into 4 quarters (suprise suprise) There are various ways that can be used to express the quarters such as March/Jan-Mar/Q1/Qrtr 1 Jun/Apr-Jun/Q2/Qrtr 2 and so it goes Same for births and deaths. A birth and death are usually registered in the quarter AFTER the event.So an August birth will be in the Oct-Dec quarter. A birth or death from October to December will usually appear in the index in Jan-Mar the following year,but the certs will always show the actual date of the event. Glen

Thanks Glen, appreciate your help. Portland Rose - I have spent many hours trying to find them - you are welcome to have a go though. Thomas Palmer 1878 Stansted Essex Charlotte (Alice) Viney 1880 Holborn Middx There are two Thomas' both borders - so tells me little and I haven't found a Charlotte. There are a Thomas and Alice who have a Lillian - perfect - but further research proved them to be the wrong ones.

3 possibles spring to mind 1 She wasn't registered 2 She was registered on time but could be either name.To be a Palmer either dad would have to agree,or mum could have lied and said she was married,to be a Viner mum would admit an illegitimate child. 3 She was registered late,and made to look legitimate. You should be able to find Lilly on the 1901 census. Can you list details of the parents? Rose

In later years they lived in Tottenham, Middlesex. My dad was born in Edmonton, Middlesex in 1912. Therefore, I have to guess possibly that area but not sure as I have been unable to locate the family in 1901 census.

Thanks Glen and Shirley Yes have tried a couple of years around it. Re Lillian Elizabeth hmmm not sure but you have given me a thought. Henry (Harry) is supposed to have been born Sept 1901, just after the wedding! Maybe I should try to find him? Thanks for your help

It is quite plausible that they didn't register the birth.Although it was supposed to be compulsory to do so,it wouldn't be difficult to avoid doing. Births had to be registered by the informants going to the registrar,not the registrar coming to them,so it would have been quite easy. Presumably you have tried a little way either side of the date you have been given? Glen

Have been searching for Lillian (aka Lylie) born, according to family info, September 1900. This was before her mum and dad were married - Aug 1901. I have searched for Lily etc. but can't find her. Dad was Palmer mum was Viney so have tried both. Is it possible that they never registered her? Any thoughts please.
