Im sure a lot of people think Im being curt when I say have a google but its amazing what you can find by entering a name and area and anything else you want info on. When I first started this I entered my main surname and found a website for a whole family tree and the originator who turns out to be a distant cousin of mine. She had been researching for 3 decades and could help me so much. Ive helped her now and its brill to be in touch, Google is wonderful.

Sylvia Sometimes people just put a mark because it was quicker. Or he might have learned to read and write later. As to who the witness was, - you'll have to try tracing her through certificates and censuses like anyone else. As the surname is the same she must be related in some way. Wntlesses were often parents, siblings, siblings-in-law.

This cert raised a few questions for me, like why would John sign with an x and then go on to be a policeman, i would have thought he would have to be able to write for that. And the witness was Sarah Calladine, Who was she?
