I've managed to get the marriage cert for Frederick Tingle which gives his fathers name as Joseph. How do I find out his mothers name so i can cross check. I've found a Joseph Tingle and family around the rigth dates in the right place(Gloucester) but could do with a mothers name to cross check. Any ideas?

You will need to obtain Fredericks Birth Certificate, its the only way. Linda

Gary, When was Frederick born? If it's before 1901, you might be able to work it out from census records and marriages who his mother was. Rose

This is the only Frederick Tingle born in Gloucestershire showing on FreeBMD is this about the time your Frederick was born? Births Sep 1908 TINGLE Frederick George Westbury S 6a 273 Georgina.

sorry should have mentioned that Frederick was not registed so no birth cert. he was in Kingswood reformatory (workhouse /orphanage) by the 1871 census. The only family in the area at the time all kinda ties up Joseph (father) died between 1861 and 1871 but was it common to just put 1 child in the orphanage?

Is there evidence that the family was well established generation wise in that area,as it seems to be a yorkshire name-perhaps the family had travelled from yorkshire and settled there. ie .have you 1861,1851 etc evidence of gloucester tingle.??

when you say 'is it normal to put one child in...' it suggests you think there were more children..... were there? which one is yours in te 1871 - I cant find one that isn't a son or a head , or an inmate ( other than a very elderly one)

The LDS have filmed the PR's for Westbury on Severn up to 1893....so if you can get to an LDS centre you could look for a baptism for Frederick. Merry

Gary, So you're saying this could be Joseph's death? Deaths Sep 1869 Tingle Joseph 40 Westbury S. 6a 135 Rose

Hi Gary, I think your best bet would be finding a baptism, but be wary, if he was illigitimate it would be easy to 'make up' a father who was 'deceased',,,,

Sorted-thats him, nice one-this is a common problem, getting wrapped up in one village or name area when people could marry just down the road or baptise because they were going to the brides village or fell out with the vicar..

Gary, forgive me if Im wrong but I seem to remember he was in a reformatory not an orphanage?

Isn't it Frederick's mother that Gary is trying to find, not Joseph's? Have you checked the Union Poor House (workhouse) records for his birth? Even if it didn't get as far as the GRO, if he was born in the poor house, they might have his birth in their registers. Kath. x
