Hi, Both my g/parents were italian and their marriage certificate states they married in St Peters Italian Church in Clerkenwell in 1906 - although I don't know where in Italy they came from or when they came to London this is what I'm trying to find out- the certificate only states both their address's in Clerkenwell as well as g/mothers fathers name - (deceased) and g/fathers father as being unknown. But what I'm thinking is that they both must have had to produce some sort of official documentation of identity in order to get married, and of which details then surely would have been registered. Can anyone advise me of where to look for further details of their marriage registration. I went to Saint Peters Italian Church and they only have the same registration details as which states on their marriage certificate.I also have checked at the FHC ( family history centre) for naturalization papers but there's nothing. |

I'm not sure that they would have had to produce any documents to get married, and if they had, I don't suppose there would be any record of that if it was not on the marriage certificate. Unless they applied for a marriage licence? (Though I don't know what the chances would be of finding anything to do with that.) You will know whether or not they had a licence because if they did it will say 'by licence' on the certificate. Kate. |

I very much doubt that they would have had to produce documentation - they might have needed to prove they were resident - but I did that when I got married using an old utility bill addressed to me. I didn't have to prove I was English in order to marry. nell |

Isn't there some sort of Italian association in London? I'm sure I've heard of it. There were vast numbers of Italian immigrants in the early 20th Century. |
