is it normal practise if a baby was born in I think a Army Hospital for the Matron to be the informant on the Birth Cert, As when mine were born they sent him round to the Wards to register the Birth . |

I don't know!! When I was born the registrar came to the ward (RAF hospital). For years I believed that when a woman was having a baby she visited a maternity ward....went to the nursery and chose a baby from those that didn't yet have a name tag. This confusion resulted from mum telling me that when she visited the nursery I was the only baby without a name tag, so she wrote one for me herself (I still have it!)........I always believed she had picked the runt that no one else had chosen! ;o(( Do you think I need to see a shrink?? What year was the birth in question? Merry |

I don;t suppose it matters who registers .... although parents would surely be better to make sure they get the right name! When mine were born we had to go the to the town hall and register them. In a military hospital I suppose it would make sense for the matron to do it - she would be seen as an upstanding member of the community.... Maybe the father was away on duty? Elly |

you are funny Merry, that explains a lot!!!!!! it was in 1923 its that so called aunt of mine finally found out her proper name and when born, she told me that she was born in an Army Hospital in India but it turns out she was born in Louise Margaret Hospital in Aldershot, she also said her fathers name was not on the birth cert but it is, although I dont think her parents ever married another problem to solve.I was surprised to see that her mother had not registered the birth. |

Perhaps Matron registered the birth because mum was still recovering after the delivery? |
