a elative bigamously married under an assumed name.He had a son who was registered under the assumed name. At the time of the relatives death when the child was about 4 it was discovered that it had been a bigamous marriage. What is the likelyhood of the son keeping his bigamous/assumed name as a surname or reverting back to his mothers maiden name. This all happened in the 1930s any help much appreciated

I'd say ''it depends''. He might have been so hurt/offended by the bigamous father's actions that he preferred his mother's name. He might have wanted not to rock the boat, and stayed with the name everyone knew him by so far. If you're hunting for him in the records - as I imagine you are - it sounds as if you've just doubled your search-field, I'm afraid! Christine

People could (and can) call themselves whatever they choose. He may have kept the name on his birth cert for simplicity's sake. His mother may have chosen to revert to her maiden name or kept her married one.

thank you for your thoughts on this. I would think that the mother reverted to her maiden name, but she would have to answer some awkward questions re his name when a birth cert was required for identification I shall have to keep on search brenda
