I would if anyone could tell me (or knew of) about the history of Travis Farm in Bradford. Yesterday, I was trying to work out from the 1891 and 1901 cenus How big Travis Farm is? How Travis Farm was divided up? This baffled me the most because it looks like my Great Great Grandfather owned it and employed a number of people on it. But the numbering seems to change as well. I know that my Great Grandfather daugther died there aged 8 months at 23 Travis Farm but there are also other numbers on the farm as well. If what I am saying sounds confusing it is because I am confused!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In 1901 there seems to be: 23 Travis - empty 21 Travis - 1 man - a cart driver Travis Farm - Wright Sutcliffe and family. Farmer, employee 19 Travis - 1 family - retired pit banksman Travis Farm - Jonathan Sutcliffe and family. Farmer, employer 15 Travis - another Wright Sutcliffe and family. Farm Labourer, employee 17 Travis - empty In 1891 the addresses are not so clear, but Jonathan Sutcliffe still seems to be the employer. In 1881 the farmer is Henry Charnock. There's still no details of the number of employees, but the farm is recorded as 19½ acres. In 1871 Henry Charnock was the farmer and he had 20 acres. In 1861 the same. In 1851 he only had 9 acres In 1841 Henry Charnock was the farmer, but no details given. It's unusual for no census to give the number of employees. You are unlucky with that! Merry

If Henry Charnock was the owner in 1841 there's a good chance you'll find him on the Tithe Apportionments for that parish. They will have the acreage details. Janice

Have you tried A2A? They may have something relevant to the Farm. I dont think its safe to assume that they OWNED it, just because he was a Gentleman or even a Yeoman. One branch of my family were Tenant Farmers, at the same farm for almost 500 years. Wills are a clue here - if the Farm is not mentioned in the disposal of the Estate, this often (but not always) means they were Tenants, not owners. You might have to do a fair amount of backtracking to find this out. OC

That's great. I have cut and paste your information on to a word document. I will be going back to Bradford for a week in November and I am going to see if they have anything. I will try and do some research before then. But if not I will use that week to do that. Thanks for your help. I going to try and look at the deeds of 1901 if I can. Rowena

Just to give an update - particulary to Merry I now think the my GGGrandfather managed the farm as supposed to owning it. I think that the Charnock family actually owned it, as they had it before my family got there and by 1922 they were back there running it. Tried to look at Maps yesterday (10/11/06) to see if Travis Farm was on any maps but there weren't. Has anyone got any ideas of where I might get hold of a map of Travis farm? Rowena
