Merry , You have just put a spanner in the works . If Rhoda was one of the children on the 1851 as 'daughter on mothers side ' then why in 1841 was Rhoda in the work house . We must be insane doing this tree lark . Cath

Merry Report 27 Jul 2006 20:11

Maybe the children were in the process of leaving the workhouse and the boys had been released before the girls? Most of the records for Witham union have not survived. What has are at the Essex CRO. I can't see a death in Witham district for a candidate for Elizabeth's first husband, given that William was born about 1837/38. (though there are a couple of male Chignalls (not Chigwells) in other parts of Essex.) Surely all those children can't be illegitimate?! Merry

GeordieCath Report 27 Jul 2006 20:21

Merry , I only found 2 deaths for male Chignell,s between 1838 and 1840 A James William Chignel Colchester and a William Chignel Rochford . The strange thing is that on the 1861 census children Robert and Wiliam are said to be son-in-law,s Now i have to work out if Elizabeth Hull was there mother or just a relative .

Merry

Merry Report 27 Jul 2006 20:24

Son's in law to who????? Jacob Hull???? Son-in-law was a term often used for step-son, so that would be right!! Merry
