I wish Malcolm!!! Still, hubby's great grandfather's brother (who farmed the place), made a tidy living from the farm. With the tenancy agreement we were able to obtain quite a few bits and pieces (letters that he had written to the owners, scraps of invoices, and also one years accounts which showed that in one year in the 1840's, after paying the rent on the farm, paying for all food and household bills, paying out wages for everyone on the farm etc., he still managed a profit of around £100 in the year (not bad in those days when all your keep had already been paid for). Looks like hubby was descended from the wrong brother. His lot didn't seem to have much money - certainly none came down as far as us, lol. :-) Kath. x |

I think you should check the Tenanacy Agreement again, it might still be in your family!!! Also the owners may have the deeds that they can show you. Malcolm. |

Yesterday, quite by chance, my son found for sale on an estate agent’s website, the farm in Northumberland where my husband’s ancestors farmed in the 1840’s (as tenant farmers, not owners). The farm is up for sale for 1.4 million pounds. I rang the agent’s just to see if they were planning any sort of open day for prospective buyers (adding that we were NOT able to buy – I wish!!!). I was told that it would only be individual viewings by appointment, but when I told them about hubby’s ancestors, they said they would send out all the details of the farm (including photos) even though they know we are not prospective buyers. They also said that the farm is in an area that can be viewed from the road, so we could drive past and view most of it. I’m now looking forward to getting the photos, which I will keep with the 1840’s tenancy agreement we already have for this property. It was well worth a phone call. Kath. x |
