Thanks Phoenix. Been at work this afternoon - will try Lambeth now.

There are 9 entries with this reference, which suggests an error when the handwritten register was typed up. With Glen, I reckon that your best bet is to go locally.

Thanks Glen. Lambeth do do them - not sure if photocopy or not, though. I'll give them a try.

Hi Sandy Sometimes the entries got lost between the local office and the GRO. Not 100% sure if Lambeth will be able to help, but it's worth asking them, either by phone or perhaps sending an e-mail. I will have a look at my thread about local RO and give it a nudge for you,not sure if Lambeth is listed but i'll have a look. Glen

I'm trying to find my grandmother's birth certificate so I can get her mother's maiden name. I found the record on ancestry - Vol 1d Page 453 but when I ordered it from GRO they couldn't find it and are refunding me £4. Where do I go from here? Her name is Harriet Varney and on the 1901 census she is with father Thomas and mother Hannah. She was born in Vauxhall in 1878. Do you think I'll have any luck with Lambeth records office? Sandy
