3 of my ancestors, as 14, 11 & 9 yo's attended a High School in 1861 - the parish looks like Prestbury - and there are 2 parts of the high school mentioned. It looks like South Side High St or Sch and South Scots or South Peet High St School. The children and staff came from places like Charlton Kings, Tewkesbury, Middlesex London, Prestbury, etc. Does anyone from Glos know the area who can check the spelling pls? Judy

Prestbury is on the outskirts of Cheltenham. Post some detail, and I'll have a look at the record. Reg

Hi Reggie - its me, Jood. How about I send the scanned census over to you? I didnt realise you were near there, my family came froom Charlton Kings back in the 1800s Jood sorry - I see what you mean. The 3 boys I was looking for (and found) were Charles Burgefs (as it was spelt then), Joseph and William (all of Glos, Charlton Kings)

This can't be 1841, because you wouldn't know where the other children were born! Merry

Merry Report 27 Jul 2006 22:26

it's 1861. Merry

It looks like ''South Side, High St, School'' in the parish of Prestbury, to me. So the school isn't named, as such. Merry

Sorry Reggie -the reason you didn't hear from me was that I'm in Sydney, Australia, and was asleep in bed. I must apologise too - it is 1861 not 1841 :(( I think it was on page 7, everthing has been crossed out except Parish - and Prestbury inserted.. They are 14th, 15th and 16th listed. (I will now alter the subject line - I am sooo sorry) Merry, I have the 1861 census for the rest of the family, and the 3 boys were missing - so they are the same family. Please excuse me if I dont reply till later today, as I have to go out. Thanks to the others for your contributions! Judy

Thanks for what you sent Reg, - can you tell me also, in this 1861 Census, - the name of the school at Prestbury, or address whatever it reads (it looks like South Side High St or Sch and South Scots or South Peet High St School. Any ideas? Thanks again Judy

Reggie Thanks for that - how very confusing, expecially as there appears to be a Chorlton near there, too! I 'assumed' all my Prestbury rellies were from the Cheshire Prestbury, and the Lancashire Chorlton..... OC

OC It isn't Chorlton..........it's Charlton (Kings) The Gloucestershire accent is at fault there.........lol! I'm Lancashire, by the way!! Reg

The address is South Side High Street. The enumerator just identified the school when he came to it, then carried on as normal afterwards. There is no indication of the name of the school. Hope this clarifies things. Reg
