Good morning folks, I now have this puzzler in front of me. My paternal great grandmother was Fanny HEWETT. On the 1841 census she is 7months old, Her father, William Hewett, age 25 born Hampshire, a bricklayer, together with her mother Mary and three siblings are on one page, poor Fanny is stuck at the top of the next page on her own. Looking for confirmation of her birth on the England & Wales Birth Index, going from the start of the index up to 1844, I can find no trace of her. I have tried looking for 'female' registered at South Stoneham, in case 'they' had not thought of a name for her........still nothing. I have also tried HEWITT. I cannot find an 1851 census form for the family but on the 1861 census Fanny is 20 yrs old living with her father and siblings at Twyford. She gives her place of birth as South Stoneham. If she is not on the Birth Index does that mean that she was not registered? Stand by for the NEXT generation back...I have a William Hewett that wed a Sarah Hewett and a John Hooper that wed a Sarah Hooper. Time to go off on your hol,s folks. lol. Regards, Mick Davie.

Registration wasn't compulsory until 1875. And anything pre-1837 will be on parish records only........some of which are on th IGI. Have you checked the IGI for Fanny's baptism? Reg

Hi Reg, Thanks for your info. If she was recorded as being 7mths old on the 1841 census Fanny must have been born in 1840. This is backed up by her age on the 1861 census return, (20). Will check the IGI though, you never know !! Regards, Mick.

Have you looked for Frances Hewitt/Hewett/Hewit/Hewet? Also Newit etc and Mewit?

When civil reg began, the responsibility for registration was placed firmly in the hands of the regisrar. So for births, he was supposed to know who was pregnant in his district and might even go to the bother of popping round to their home after the birth of the child for the registration to take place. If the registrar was responsible for a small village (and he was of the right sort of character) then he might be able to record most births in his district successfully......but in a place like Millbrook he wouldn't have a chance - far too many people and far too many comings and goings near a busy port!! Gradually the onus for completing the registration passed to the family, but it wasn't until 1875 that someone could be fined for non-registration of a birth or death (and then only if someone noticed!)
