David - I looked for apprenticeship records at the Guildhall, for a lighterman apprentice. The staff were very helpful there. Joy |

Hi David, There are microfiche of some apprenticeship records at the Guildhall Library, but I don't know how complete they are, or of what trades, or how they are organised. But if all else fails, perhaps worth a chance? Good luck, Jay |

Thanks very much to all three of you:) Nell - I think yr right:) I'm going to the LMA soon but I think the Guildhall has got to be my next port of call. The children were Mary, Mary Magdalene, William and John. Not a great help but there is a William son of John and Ann baptised at Aldgate. Only thing is there is an 8 year gap between the first two siblings I have and there may have been others with more relevant names:) Hi Jen:) I keep looking at that site because I have a load of Huguenot ancestors but I just haven't taken the plunge yet:) Think I'll have to! Thanks:) Thanks Jay - I've never looked at apprenticeship papers. Are they kept at the local records office do you know? (which would be the Guildhall or the LMA in this case) |

David, If he was a silk weaver would he have served an apprenticeship? If he did, the apprenticeship papers may well give name & abode of his father. Jay |

Methinks you would need to go to London Met Archives and/or Guildhall in London to do a bit of digging amongst their records. Any clues in his children's names, that might match the parents for the baptism you found? |

I have an ancestor called William Berry, who was living in Bear Alley, Holborn, London in 1792 and Petticoat Lane, London in 1795. He married Mary Magdalene (Marie Madeleine) Bachellier (baptised 1752 Threadneedle Street) in 1781 in Stepney and the IGI has four children for them - one baptised in Bethnal Green, two in St Sepulchre and the youngest at St Botolphs, Aldgate. His wife was a Huguenot as was his daughter-in-law so there is a possibility he may have been as they seem to have married within their own community a lot. It's also possible that he was a silk weaver - his son and most of his grandchildren were. Other than this, I know nothing about him. I can't think of anything much I can do to find out where he came from. There is a possible baptised at Aldgate but I've got no evidence to suggest it's him. Has anyone got any suggestions? Am just off out but would appreciate any ideas:)) |
