From 1861 untill 1901 Hannah Whitingham always states West Bromwich for place of birth. Except 1881 on this the translation both on disc and Ancestry states Arpon Sa.... Staffs. But on the original on Ancestry. The A is nothing like the A that the enumerator has on other words further down on the original. Could someone please have a look for me? I just can't make it out. it is the 1881 census of Yorkshire, Altofts. Piece no 4573, Folio 108 . page 41. Thank you very much. Eve

My vote goes to Upon Soar. The next question is Where upon Soar? The River Soar is mostly in Leicestershire (Barrow-upon-Soar springs to mind). Anyone got a one-inch or larger O.S. map of Staffordshire or access to MultiMap etc.? Bearing in mind that West Brom. is also in Staffordshire, it could be quite close. J

I've just had another look at it and I'm just wondering whether it's Spon Lane. Agreed the initial letter doesn't look like an S but then the first letter of the second word doesn't look like an S either, more like an L. The River Soar is nowhere near. A large scale map of Birmingham is called for. J
