Genealogy Chat

I wrote to the archivist at the Royal London Hospital (in Whitechapel/Stepney area) asking if they would have any record regarding the burial of my half-sister who died at the hospital in 1946 (she was aged 12 hours and had a sick mother and a father in the services who was out of the country - so no one to organise a burial, or whatever). The archivist has replied saying they may well have helped with the burial if no family member could take on the responsibility, but unfortunately the records no longer exist. They ''helpfully'' added that the burial might have taken place in any one of many cemeteries in the East End...........................So, do I give up?? Any ideas please.......Merry x

I just can't bear to think no one knows where she is.....No one in my dad's family remembered his first wife having a living child....but the family isn't close and there are an awful lot of them.....another cousin/niece/granddaughter would be of little consequence..... Merry

hiya merry, do you have her death cert?? maybe worth contacting councils local to the hospital if they can help you with her burial?? or have you already been down this route? i read the thread that you posted before, but memory isnt too good, sorry Julie

Yes, I do have the death cert, but everytime I think.....''right, let's start this'', I just get so bogged down seeing how many cemeteries there are!! I haven't even worked out which authorites hold records for which cemeteries .....it's so different to outside London....hence the Country Bumpkin reference!! Merry

Merry, the only way is forward, compile list of all known councils, then cemetaries, then once you have list, you can please yourself, how many you contact at a time, i know its a alongwinded job, but patience will pay off eventually. I am so glad i dont live there, but then again looking for half of my rellies is a mammoth task in itself Julie

That's the frustrating thing.....they were only living in Romford Essex due to the aftermath of WW2 (my dad was still abroad)....they should have been in a Staffordshire village!! She (the mum) must have been admitted to the Royal London Hospital because her condition was serious :o(( Merry

Hi Merry What a sad story! You might want to try, the City of London Cemetary and Crematorium. I dont live that far from it, and I understand that its one of the largest in the uk. They are on line, it only about 2 or 3 miles from the Royal London. I dont know if they may be able to help, but its certainly the main cemetary for the east london area. Claire

Doh.....Am I reading the info wrong?? On this page: http://www(.)cityoflondon.gov.uk/Corporation/our_services/health_safety/cemetery_crematorium/burial_registers.htm at the start it says what info they have: Burial number Date of burial Name of person buried Description, avocation, and parochial residence of person buried Sex and age District in which the death is registered From what parish removed Situation of grave (square and number) Number of grant Description of interment Consecrated or unconsecrated ground Ceremony performed by further down under ''Genealogy research service'' it says: Please be aware that the information recorded about a person is limited to: The date of burial / cremation The full name of the deceased* The age of the deceased* The address of the deceased, or place of death* This seems very odd???? Pretty pricy too, esp if they are not going to tell you the grave site (as suggested above). Suppose I'm going to have to go there???? Merry
