My great, great grandfather is turning out to be a right nuisance, bless him! I only have one concrete piece of information about him, his marriage certificate, the rest is an old family tale......... Bear with me and I'll post this information next.... Ta Donna x

George Gibb married Janet (Jessie Cruickshank) on 6th March 1882 in Camlachie, Glasgow. George Gibb (Jnr) was 26 on the date of his marriage so, from this, I'm basing his YOB as 1855/6. His usual place of residence in March 1882 was Tylefield Street, Glasgow. On his marriage certificate he describes his occupation as a Journeyman Letter Press Printer. He details his parents as being George Gibb, Lieutenant (Royal King or could be Navy) and his mother as Margaret Gibb m.s. Smith. By the date of his marriage both parents were deceased. I have looked on Scotlandspeople for the death of his mother and there are no matches for a Margaret Gibb, nee Smith, married to a George Gibb. I've also looked on the OPRs on ScotlandsPeople, no Margaret Smith's married any George Gibbs. One of the kind people on GR gave me a possible lead that in 1881 he was boarding with a family in Newhills Aberdeen, which puts him right place/right time for where his future wife was and this George (we're talking Jnr here) claims to have been born in England.....so I move on to Ancestry and look through census and still have no joy. What makes matters worse is that he marries in 1882 and by 1891 wife has remarried, the story being that George Jnr moved south to find work and died en route. Do I consign him to the land of brickwall or is there anything I can do......plus how do I find out about George Snr allegedly being a Lieutenant in the Royal Kings or Navy....cos I've googled until my fingers are red raw.......and I'm potty training my 2 year old amongst all this ...lol! Any help and pointers will be very gratefullly appreciated. Donna x

I didn't see where he was born. Do you have that info from the 1881?

Hi Grampa Jim, back online & in for the night now. Unfortunately the 1881 census for Scotland only tells us England as place of birth for the possible Geogre Junior....about as useful as an ashtray on a motorbike! Having made my mum dredge up any vague memory she has at all of this family, she seems to recall that it was the Royal Navy George Gibb Senior was in. But I don't know where to go from here......and seem to have fallen off my learning curve...lol! Cheers Donna

Donna If the father was in the Navy, then he should appear in the Navy List, published annually. If the Royal King was a ship, then you could find details of him serving on board. Leaving the boards for the evening, but naval ancestors offer up all sorts of useful leads.

Were his parents English or married in England?

Hi Pippa, I have absolutely no idea....I'm not helping much am I? I have checked the OPRs on ScotlandsPeople and they definitely didn't register a marriage in Scotland, having looked on Ancestry this morning I couldn't find one there either...assuming I have the correct names, of course. I cannot find any George & Margaret Gibb (nee Smith) living together anywhere who fit the occupations that I have on the marriage certificate. As George Jnr seems to have died whilst 'going south' to look for work (between 1883/4 and 1891 when wife remarried) I don't even have his death cert to go by.....literally just a marriage cert.....worse still it appears that it was no-one related to them that witnessed the marriage so I don't even know if there were siblings. As I write this I feel a one-way ticket to Brickwallsville coming on..... Cheers Donna

Thanks Liz, It's a thought and would explain why we are not finding Margaret in the same place with him, although she was dead by 1882, as was George Snr. Your info re George Jnr has had me wading through Ancestry under all sorts of English permutations but perhaps he was a Naval birth....ohh so much to think about. I've taken those details for my 'further investigation' file...would explain why George Jnr headed back up Aberdeen way, if Dad came from there...then again may mean nothing. Thank you again, Donna x
