Having found an extracted record of a marriage I've then found an extracted record of the baptism of one partner (usually the wife), but not the other one. (Has happened a few times). ....................So - how do I find out which parish the other partner was baptised in? ...... Thanks in advance for your comments..................Barbara

Have you got them on a census which would tell you where they were born? Marriages usually took place in the brides parish which could be why you can find baptisms for the females. Perhaps the parish the groom came from is not covered by the IGI. Sam x

Hi Sam Thanks for the comments Unfortunately these are all pre-census. Just to make life more awkward! Even if the grooms parish were covered - how would I know which one it was? (someone's going to tell me there's an obvious answer to that no doubt) Barbara

If you were able to look at the marriage entry in the actual parish record, you might find other clues. If the groom lived AT THE TIME OF THE WEDDING in another parish it would say this in the record but they didn't necessarily note these sort of things on the IGI. You might also find his occupation which could be a clue. Unfortunately a person only had to live in a parish for a few weeks to be classed as 'of this parish'. The next thing to do would be to search the surrounding parishes in an ever increasing circle to see if you can find his baptism. If its a common name you might have to accept that you might not be able to prove it. :-( Anne

Thanks for the suggestions Ann The next question that raises for me is - where would the parish records be held. All the civil bmds for this parish were registered in Worksop (Nottinghamshire) whereas the parish itself is in Derbyshire. Both Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire I guess. Barbara

Don't forget to look at the Banns as well as the marriage, this will tell you where the spouse was resident. It's helped me several times to locate the spouse's birth.
