Can anyone help find Rachel, please? See below Jay

Rachel Mary Boulter, born Gt Yarmouth c1844 Last heard of in 1859, when tried at Yarmouth under the Juvenile Offenders Act. Offence – stealing 2 blankets, 2 dresses and other articles, the property of her father. Was sentenced to 21 days hard labour at the house of correction, to be followed by three years at the Girls House, Ipswich. Hard labour not enforced and she was removed to the Girls’ House at Ipswich on 12th April 1859. I don’t know what happened to her after this date – can anyone find her in 1861, please? Glad to have helped. I also had a look for marriages after 1865 for her but none in Ipswich - there are a few possibles for areas further afield (as you'll see when you search). Hope you manage to find what happened to her. Terrible thing for a child to be treated like that by her own father, eh? I hope she had a better life later on.

Could be a loving but despairing father trying to prevent the girl making a 'terrible mistake' by going off with someone unsuitable?

Don't think so Cliff - a year previously (1858) one of his sons appeared in court, charged with stealing property from his father, but the son was acquitted. Other cases where the father was the plaintiff - seems to have been for ever accusing people of stealing. His children seem to have lacked proper care & attention & moral guidance. Jay

Janet I wonder if the father had some kind of mental health problem...Always imagining he was being stolen from. I doubt it would have been picked up at that time if in every other way he appeared 'normal'. Just a thought. Chris

Chris, During this time span, father ran a pub and I don't think time was given to the children! A different son, aged 12, was up at court in 1854 for throwing stones in the street and was sentenced to 7 days hard labour. Also, Rachel had a previous court apperance in 1855 (aged 10) but as a witness - a 17 yr old youth was accused of unlawful assault 'against her will feloniously to ravish and carnally know her'. There were 4 other witnesses, so I don't think she was making it up. The young man accused 'died suddenly before trial, whilst on bail' All I have are court cases! Jay

OMG.....7 days hard labout for throwing stones in the street????? That's harsh !! Mind you, I can think of a few people...........
