Thank you everybody! I tried taking the plunge and invested my first six quid. I now have two marriage records and two birth records and about 40 searches on the 'to do' list... This should keep me occupied! Gordon

Scottish birth certificates give the marriage date of the parents which is very useful. Jean x.

Hi Gordon, If you have the names of your great grandparents, (I'm presumming these are the Scottish ones) Then I'm sure you will be able to find their marriage cert. You need to register with scotlandspeople, but it's free. In the meantime, if you can give us your great grandparents names, I'm sure at least one of us will be able to track down their marriage date. Liz

The ones i have seen tend to give a bit more info for the parents,to be honest it's a while since i had any images, and it was for someone else's tree. I seem to remember that the names of the parents and the g/fathers were on the ones i downloaded, but don't quote me on that. If you can narrow down your search criteria it is possible to get the right image first time, and the cost is actually far less than the English equivalent. Sorry i can't be more specific, but it was a while ago now. Glen

Thanks for the info, Glen. Any idea what the extra info on Scottish Birth Certificates is? Gordon

Just re reading your known details, the birth entries for 1906 are just a smidge too late. The index runs to 1905 for births, for a later birth you would need to apply to the Scottish GRO for a birth cert. Full info on the dates covered by scotlands people are on the website, off pat i think births go to 1905,marriages to about 1930 and deaths to about 1950. Any later events via the Scotland GRO as above. I think your best bet would be to try and get the birth certs for the 1906-7 births. Scottish records have more info than English ones, and the info from the 1906 events will help to place a census lookup in the 1901. Glen

The internet equivalent of Ancestry for Scottish records is the scotlandspeople website. It's a pay per view site, but with careful selection you can view results and download bmd registers for less than £2 each. The bmd index runs from 1855,t(he start of Scottish civil registration),the index doesn't run to the present day,but for any research from 1901 backwards you will not find a better site. The census is also featured on the site too, along with some parish records. Glen

What I have so far: The dates of birth of both my grandparents (1906 and 1907) with possible places. The names of my great-grandparents Names of some of my grandparents siblings A possible year of death for my great-grandmother. Married surnames of some of my gg-aunts Now I have accessed scotlandspeople, from time to time, but I'm loathe to start paying to search for Campbells and Nisbets without at least trying to narrow down the possibilities a little. Any ideas? Cheers! Gordon

Scotland's People?

Gordon Report 25 Jul 2006 22:36

After completing the preliminary work on the English side of the family, I now turn to my mother's side. I've done no research in Scotland before now and only have sketchy details of names. The only confirmed dates are after the 1901 census. So where do I start?
