Thanks everyone. Ellen, I tend to agree, a visit to Kew is needed. As I said, his name was very common. I even tried to locate his hospital records, as I knew which hospital he was in, but I have just been informed by Gloucester records office that the records weren't kept. I could cry. Vivian, I knew about the medals but I don't know what happened to his. I have just had a brilliant thought! Thanks Vivienne. My grandfather had three daughters and one son, they are all dead now, BUT I wonder if my uncle was given the medal by his father. I haven't had contact with my cousins for over 30yrs but I know how to contact them. Certainly worth a try!

Hi Teresa, I have the same problem with my Grandfather but he was awarded an Army Pension because of his loss of limb. I think there might be hope for us, as I have heard that Ancestry might be going to make available some Documents online for our Ancestors who fought in W W 1, or failing that, then its a visit to Kew. The Certificate's I have for my Grandfather all just say Soldier, and don't give Regiment, how unlucky are we !! Regards Ellen.

Merry, he didn't get married until 1917. He met my grandmother when he was in a Red Cross hospital. She was a nursing aid. He is listed as a soldier on his marriage certificate.

Did he get married or have any children during 1914-1817? If you are lucky his army number might be on a certificate. Merry

is there any way to narrow down the search for my grandfather's records. All I know he was born Arthur Gibson(no middle name )in Barnsley 1889. He was a miner before joining the army and was invalided out around 1917. Going on what little information I have, can I find him? There are an awful lot of records for Arthur Gibson on NA.
