Thanks Janet I didn't know that. This marriage was in 1821 and they did come from different parishes. Sue

A lot of the marriages by licence (certainly pre 1837) but not all, were because the bride and groom came from different parishes. Jay

Thanks Zoe. The info of the marriage by licence came from the parish records. I also received a marriage certificate today for another couple and on it it said by certificate not as is per usual after banns. Sue.

Sue There are two types of wedding in this scenario marriage by Licence or marriage by Banns Banns are the notice ut into a church to tell people wo is marrying so they have time to object to it etc Marriage by licence is where someone signs a declaration that they are free to marry and they are sposored by a third party to that affect and they pay a sum for the licence Both types have a marriage certificate. Parish records will often contain details of the Banns (in the parish of BOTH parties if they lived in different areas). I also believe you can sometimes obtain details of the licencees and sponsors etc - but not sure where you get them from.

Banns are, of course, required to be read for three consecutive Sundays prior to the marriage. By licence does away with the need for this. Being married by licence only saved three weeks (and since more than half the brides had burgeoning waistlines in those days) not sure why they would have bothered. Hopefully someone with more knowledge in this area will be able to help. In the meantime, this posting will get this back to the top of the list on page 1. Victoria

Can anyone tell me the difference of a marriage by licence and a marriage by certificate. Was by licence a rushed job? Sue
