Help with occupation 1871 census

Hi I have a Joseph Picton on 1871 Wales Census RG10/5449 Folio: 7 Page 11 GSU No: 848049 Swansea Can anyone please help with occupation. I think it looks like “shingters” Mind you the way I have been seeing or missing things lately it could be anything Yvonne

I would say it says 'shingler' - the cross on the t is feint - looks like a line underneath, therefore making this an L not a t. I don't know what a Shingler was though. Dea x

The letters do look like shingter, but I have been looking on old ocupations wecsites and can't see anything which fits Linda

I can't get this page to open Scottish occupations list in Scotland of oldOld occupations and unusual occupations in Scotland from Scottish work trades ... Iron Shingler Iron worker who operated a steam hammer on wrought iron from ... but it looks promising Linda

I thought shingles were a type of roof tile, so he could be laying those too!!! Merry

Oh Merry!! This is such a change from 'Jones', I was hoping everything was going to be complication free!!! Now have to go off to check for roofers :-((

Most of the neighbours seem to be employed in the Iron Industry so I think you are pobably safe with that one. Dea
