thanks Heather Im going to have a go with Google now, have a little look. I have just found other info from Parsh records which show a Samuel 1806 whose parents were Samuel and Ann (plus 4 other children) from Meare in Somerset. Im a bit confused by it though because 3 of the children were born after and in differnet areas which one of them conflict with the info that I have. I still think I need to get some certs just to verify what ive got altogether....thanks again for your help, youve been wonderful Lisa xx

Oh, Im far from expert - but doesnt it annoy you when they get married or have kids just before registration dates. You were lucky getting so much certified info from a cousin. I dont know if there are any online parish clerks for Somerset. May be worth a google. There was a brill one in Cornwall who looked up my Cornish baptisms and threw in a couple of marriage (free of charge).

Thanks Heather, I understand what your saying. Ive been in touch with a family member who has supplied the census info along with photos of the family. The photos are of Samuels Son Charles and his wife Martha. On the census it does show Samuel 1806 married Elizabeth. On the site where I found there childrens baptisms there parents were Samuel and Elizabeth. I have also just found that a Samuel and Elizabeth got married in Yatton in Dec 1832. Like you said though I do need to confirm that this is them. Thanks Heather, is nice to have a bit of advise from someone else Lisa xx

Its just Id hate you to find at some point you are following the wrong man (it happens!). You should work backwards from what you know is definite. Say you have grandads birth cert. From that you have his dads name and occuaption,. where they were living when he was born and his mums maiden name. Using that definite info you can look backwards - find a complete match in a census then find the parents marriage so you can check THEIR fathers names and so on. There was a thread on here yesterday where someone was obviously following a chap with the same name and roughly in the same area but then Tom actually found a mistranscribed census which showed a different man who in fact was the match. This entry is on the IGI: I dont know the county but I guess this is a possible parents entry? Worth hanging on to for a while? Samuel Cox just in case. All the baptsims for a Sam Cox in Somerset were submitted and so not 100%. As suggested, try different spellings etc. Must go, work calls! Good luck. Sorry I havent replied sooner Heather im in work just been for a break ad forgot to say on the boards. I dont have the childrens marriage certs yet. I have all the census info from 1841-1901. I have just found the children baptised in All Saints Church, Kingston Seymour. Should I get the marriage certs first???

But you are working backwards? Otherwise you could be following the wrong man? Do you have the kids marriage certs? Dont go by the 1841 for a birth year as ages were rounded down to the nearest 5. So if he were 24 he would appear as 20 and so on. Gives a wider span for his birth.

Thankyou ladies, I found the birth year 1806 on some of the census info. On the 1841 it states Kingston Seymour was where he was living with his children. Thankyou for the additional site info I will have a look through now I dont think he remarried then again I dont really have that much info. I know he married Elizabeth and they had 3 children,Samuel, Louisa and Charles. Lisa xx

Did he marry or remarry after 1837? In which case you may get his marriage cert and his fathers name from that.

When doing your search, remember to use variations on the surname as it may have originally been spelt as 'Cocks'. There is also another website that is handy for searching parish records - www(.)familyhistoryonline(.)net (remove brackets) . You will need a £5 sub but that will last you ages as it costs very little to view each entry (as little as 7pence).

Thanks Sam I am grateful, will have a look at the site now. From the Census info I think he was from Meare, Somerset....dont know if that is going to help me LIsa xx

No births were registered before late 1837 and then it wasnt compolsury for another 40 years nearly so there is no way you will find a birth reg for this man. As you have a year, where did you find that? From a census record? In which case did it give a town? Parish records will give you baptisms, not births, though these are usually within weeks of a birth, not always and you can find adult baptisms or mass baptisms of a family of kids who could be any age.

First oplace to try is the IGI at www.familysearch.org as this has lots of parish records (but by no means al of them). If he's not on there, you will probably have to consult the parish records which will be held at the County Records Office. For that, you will need to know which parish in Somerset he was from otherwise you will have to search them all which will take an age! Also, as births weren't registered until 1837, you probably won't find his date of birth, just the date of his baptism. Sam x
