Just seen another post on this forum (Burnt Records To Go On-Line - Ancestry) - might we worth your while waiting a while to see if you can actually search the records yourself on Ancestry once they go online!

If you can get to Kew then you can do the searches for yourself but I hired a Military Researcher to do my searches for me - cost was approx £40 but for that I received back every document from when my grt grandfather signed up in 1901 to when he left in 1920 - a huge pile of A3 sized photocopied documents (about 40 or more pages - although not every soldier will have the same volume of documents. It just depends on how long he was in service and what has survived). I thought it was worth the money, considering the time involved - you might get it cheaper if you hunt around and ask for a few quotes.

Does anyone know how to search Army records and if so, is it expensive.
