John Scantlebury Rowe's service record's online here: http://www.naa.gov.au/The_Collection/recordsearch.html Make sure cookies are enabled, and choose 'search now as a guest'. He was demobbed safe and sound in 1919. It looks as though he was given leave to help out on the farm in Mevagissey. |

Strictly speaking, I don’t need this info for my project. I’m supposed to be doing an ancestral chart, and this info just isn’t on a direct line for us, but… I’ve been googling the names ROWE and SCANTLEBURY along with Tasmania, because we turned up a link in my husband’s family. We found a letter which detailed a chunk of family there and had a slightly misspelled name which I was able to link in with the tree info I had already. I then found a CAMERON website which gave me a great chunk more – the letter had been from someone with the surname, Cameron. A bit more googling has found these evocative – and elusive snippets… <<John Scantlebury ROWE Regimental number 32623 Religion Methodist Occupation Farmer Address Christmas Hills, Smithton, Tasmania Marital status Single Age at ...>> <<John Scantlebury ROWE ... Next of kin, Father, TH Rowe, Christmas Hills, Smithton, Tasmania. Enlistment date, 18 October 1916. Rank on enlistment, Driver ...>> They come from links with this (or similar) address: www.aif.adfa.edu.au:8080/showPerson?pid=262439 - 4k - Supplemental Result – It 's a secure site – an educational project with restricted access - so I can’t get anything more than those tantalising glimpses. They definitely tie in to my info - see below (‘’Meva’’ is an abbreviation for Mevagissey): Parents: Alice Maud(e) Mary SCANTLEBURY b 1870-1 [1881C] b 1871Q1 StA 5c138 b 15 FEB 1871 [C020632] bap 5 MAR 1871 Meva [C020632] 1871RG10/2268: age abt 1 mth; Meva 1881RG11/2304: age 10; (aunt Rackett) Tregony Hill, Meva. 1891 shop asst with aunt 1891 – not found (yet) m 1891Q4 StAustell (?Mevagissey) 5c-194 Thomas Hicks ROWE (see below) emigrated to Australia (Tasmania) ?1974 Will AD960/144 #57937 Alice Maud ROWE Thomas Hicks ROWE: m 1891Q4 StA 5c-194 emigrated to Australia (Tasmania) 1954 Will AD960/81 p358 #34651 They had two daughters: Alice (Dolly) Maud ROWE: b 29 Jun 1901 Smithton, Tas [http://www.clan-cameron.org.au] m 29 Dec 1924 Vernon Theodore William CAMERON 1983 Will AD960/186 #72606 Alice Maud CAMERON d 15 June 1983, Tasmania [B Cameron letter] and Olive (Ollie) ROWE: b ?1896Q2 StA 5c-112 Olive Gwendoline ROWE m Richard (Dick) X?? (b 8 Apr 1903 ?) I imagine that this elusive one was a son killed in WW1, because he wasn't mentioned in the letter which was clearly including some info intended to make it easier to work out relationships. Anyone who can illuminate this?? Christine |

I have a non-essential query (but it bugs me because I have partial info). See below (I've drafted it in Word, so it shouldn't be long - I hope!)... |
