Molly and Nancy

Molly and Polly are both pet names for Mary. Usual pet name for Margaret is Meg or Peggy. But Molly and Nancy can both be names in their own right, or nicknames for people whose real names aren't connected to them at all. My mother sometimes called me Claudia (don't ask why, I've no idea). She also called my brother Snoodlepush, he's really Robert. So you can't always tell.....

I always thought Molly was an pet name for Margaret (remember Milly-Molly-Mandy?) And Polly was the pet name for Mary. I agree that Nancy is the pet name for Ann. But of course, they can all be names in their own right as well. Tina

But you do sometimes get odd nicknames. I had a great Aunt known as Nancy. Everyone was surprised when I found out her name was Edith.

Molly is usually short for Mary. Nancy can be a pet name for Ann.
