I have a well-documented Lishman family which begins in Cartmel, Lancashire. John (bap. Feb. 1766) married Mary Myers (bap. Oct. 1761) in Cartmel Priory church in Nov. 1786 (verified by others gone before). They had 9 children born in wedlock, again all reasonably well verified, but a potential relative claims there are 2 children born prior to the marriage. The first of these is Mary (May 1783) from whom she claims descent via an illegitimate son Thomas (1809, Lancaster). A later marriage to Mark Irwin is a possibilty. The second child is James (May 1786). I'm more confident about him but he's not relevant to this quest!! The 7th. child in wedlock is Sarah (Dec. 1798, Cartmel). She is said to have had 3 children out of wedlock in Lancaster (Mary 1822, Sarah 1827, Maria 1832) followed by 2 marriages in succession (James Jack, William Marsden/Marston). She joined the Mormon trek with her 3 daughters around 1835 and they all ended up eventually in Grantsville, Utah. All of this is well-documented on OneWorldTree (though bargepoles feature in my thinking). If anybody can check any of this out I'd be extremely grateful. On the other hand, I'm seriously thinking about buying BIVRI (see my other thread) and I will quite understand if you can't be bothered. J |

Elaine Your 2 sightings (Thomas birth and Irwin marriage) look highly probable. I'm not too concerned about what then happened to Thomas - I have a whole branch of his descendants who may or may not belong to me. They were paper-makers who moved around Lancashire and Westmorland and then decamped to Gloucestershire. I'll take a rain-check on your kind offer of the Lishman extract for the time being; there are thousands of them and I can only take them in small doses. Jeanne Thanks for the pointer to RootsChat. I'll have a look. GONE - damn!! Other helpful souls My tree runneth over with submitted records, thank you. |
