Tom Jepson Gritton and Caroline Nash had quite a few children, but not a George, so no he wasn't grandad's brother. Cannot find any other marriage for my nan, Eliza Elizabeth Anstead (although she was born Eliza Elizabeth Ayres), other than that to my grandad in 1912. My aunt knew her birth details later in life, but it was kept a family secret. All the family were born in SGE, Stepney, and most baptised at St Dunstan's. My nan's 'sister' Julia Anstead (who I can find no birth, marriage or death details) had a child Emma Anstead in 1899 and just left the father's details blank. Thank you, Jeanne |

There would be no problem if she called herself Mrs Gritton - who registered the birth? - was it Mum? (It's a wise child that knows it's own father in anycase!) Jay |

hiya, was george alberts brother??? is it possible she was married to him, and he died/deserted her?? which might explain her not getting married until 1912, as you had to wait so many yrs, i think if hubby deserted before you could marry again Julie |

Yes, George Gritton is down as the father on the birth cert. I wanted to think it could have been a simple error, but I now know that it was commonly believed in the family that my Aunt Margaret didn't belong to my grandad. |

Jeanne If they weren't married then he should have had to have been present when the birth was registered. But, she could have always pretended they were married I suppose. Is his name on the birth cert? Margaret |

Good evening everyone. Can you please clarify this point for me. Is it true that in order to put a father's name on a birth certificate, he had to be present when the birth was registered ? I have a Margaret Louisa Gritton, born to Louisa Gritton (nee Anstead) and George Gritton in 1906, although my Nan (Louisa) didn't marry my grandad till 1912 and he was Albert Gritton and she put spinster on her marriage cert.
