I have not yet done any research other than that which can be done from my PC, but I would like to start delving a little more. Most of the family I want to investigate lived in various areas of London (Middlesex) during the 1800's and I'm not sure where the records are actually held for areas such as Pancras and Shoreditch. Does anyone know? Do you have to make an appointment? I imagine that records for more rural areas (Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire for example) would still be held at the county offices. |

for London and Middlesex, you need the LMA, if you google it you will be able to find it. It is near The Angel Islington and Farrindon tube stations. For Leicestershire the archives are in Wigston Magna, just outside Leicester itself. I went on the train to Leicester and then got the bus to the archives. You don;t need to book at the LMA, but would advice booking at others - also for some you need a readers ticket, this doesn't cost anything, but you will need to take some ID (with photo on) with you the first time. Also, take lots of change for copies of the parish registers, loads of paper for notes, pencils as well because many don't allow pens, and most importantly, have a GREAT TIME! |

LMA stands for London Metropolitan Archive in case googling comes up with other uses of the initials :-) |

LMA is a few minutes' walk from the Family Records Centre in Clerkenwell and also not far from the Islington Local History Centre, should you have rellies from there. LMA - don't need to book, though it does sometimes get very busy and its only open alternate Saturdays. Islington LHC is TINY and has limited opening hours. You do need to make an appointment. Camden Archives in Holborn Library, Theobalds Road might help with the Pancras relatives. It has electoral registers etc. You don't need an appointment. |

The LMA does indeed cover most of what is now Greater London - but unfortunately, (as I found out on a recent visit to LMA), they don't hold parish records for the City of London or the City of Westminster - for those, you need to visit the Guildhall Library and the Westminster Archives respectively. The LMA also didn't have copies of parish records for some of the outer parishes of Greater London - such as Mitcham, Carshalton, etc. For these I was referred to the county records office (Surrey in that case).
