All Thankyou soooo much for your help on this. I am certain that Helens info is the one I am looking, as I know some of the family originated from Barkway, Hertfordshire. It also indicates that Hankin/Ankin must have been the mothers maiden name but a generation earlier than the one I was originally talking about. Thanks again for all of your help Claire

Think I've solved your mystery - From IGI, James Barnes was baptised 6 Oct 1827 at Barkway, Herts. Parents were Joseph and Mary. Also found - JOSEPH BARNES Marriages: Spouse: MARY HANKIN Marriage: 04 SEP 1819 Barley, Hertford, England Batch No. M072122 Barley/Barkway are villages next to each other.

Thanks Jen and Margaret. I agree I need to get a birth cert to confirm either way. Just thought it was a little strange how it had followed through another generation then stopped! You never know I'll order a cert and it will go back yet another generation!! Thanks again Claire

The mothers maiden name is often used. But, as another christian name rather than a surname Margaret

Hi Claire On one side of my tree the eldest daughter is called the mothers name and on the other side the mothers maiden name was given to all of the children as their middle name. It could be either way. Have you ordered any of their birth certficates as it could state it more clearly on there. Maybe somebody who has been here longer than me could give you a better idea. Jen

Can anyone give me some advise please? I got my great Grandfathers marrige cert from GRO his father is noted as James Robert Hankin Barnes. I did some digging around on ancestry and traced the family back to Carlisle on the 1851 census. Today I checked the details on Family search. and discovered that all of James Robert Hankin Barnes' brothers and sisters have Ankin in their names as well. Could this be a family name or a double barrelled surname to include the mothers maiden name. Does anyone know if using the mothers maiden name as well was common then? Grateful for any advice Thanks Claire
