I have tried to find out but can't - I hope someone can help. Would a child born in the mid 1980s have legally had to be registered in the district in which they were born or could they have been registered elsewhere?

In the district where they were born. I know that was what we had to do when my children were born in the 1990's, and it would have been more convenient to register them at our nearest register office, but that one was a different district from the hospital! Kate.

Same here,my youngster was born in the nearest maternity hospital. 18 miles from my hometown, and a different district, only marriages and deaths from that district nowadays, unless someone gets caught out and has the youngster at home. Glen

You can register a birth by declaration in any district office in England and Wales but the information is then sent off to the district where the birth took place and it is that office that actually puts the birth into its register. So for example, if you were born on holiday in Brighton but your parents live in Scarborough, they can register by declaration in their local office (or any other ) but it is the registrar in Brighton who will put the birth into the register and produce the certificates.
