Sorry all for very tardy reply but have only just managed to get on line. Do not know what is going on but had to restore back to 2 days ago. I am not sure wether the microsoft update or the Adobe update caused the problem as they both came down on the same day. Thankyou all for your input re the cleaner and reg fix. I am going to leave well alone and hope that whatever was going on today was a temporary blip. I have never had problems before so fingers crossed.

Thanks for that Judy. I have to say it seemed to speed my old machine up very well but then I guess the thing to do is keep the machine maintained from the very start with these other programs then you dont have to do a mass clean out. Oh Judy, did you see the results of my 'out of range' query? I took the puter back to the repair shop and after 2 hours they rang and said that it was behaving perfectly - no out of range message. I went down there and within a minute of typing on it, up came the message - I screamed to them to come through from the shop front to see it. Im sure they thought I was making it up. Well after a bit of uncomfortable questioning on my part and them getting a bit up tight it turned out to be a video card was overheating. They replaced it free of charge - I think they were glad to get rid of me. No probs since then.

I don't recommend CCCleaner.....I've had MANY PCs come into shop where CCCleaner was the problem....most don't connect the problem with the PC with the program because the problems start a while after program is installed and used. It also adds adware/spyware to your PC.....keep in mind, most (not all) free programs downloaded from the internet are free for a reason....in many cases it's the adware/spyware being added. You get what you pay for! Stick with routine maintenance of PC and reputable adware/spyware programs.....free programs AD-AWARE being one, as is SPYWAREBLASTER. Judy

Many thanks Ron. As I said I was conned into buying the Registry Mechanic program but I always feel a bit iffy about using it particularly since the mechanic told me they could cause more trouble than they fix.

Heather, you don't need to download the Microsoft registry checker, it's built into all xp installations, go to, Start, Help and type in Registry into the search window then click on Windows Registry. Ron www.genealogyprinters*com

Its called CCleaner (Crap Cleaner!) and its a free download - just google for it. It does clean the puter and certainly made mine run a lot faster. But do make sure you keep the cookies and stuff you want or remember your passwords! Here it is - I googled for it: http://www*ccleaner*com/ remember to replace asterisks with full stops in the addy. Carole (Mrs Ron) I didnt know Microsoft had a registry checker - is it worth downloading?

Steer clear, leave the Registry well alone unless you have a problem and you know what your doing, messing with the Registry can mess up your PC big time, ask here first if you have a problem. Windows has it's own Registry Checker if you need it. Carol (Rons better half) www.genealogyprinters*com

Well Judy in the States or Ron genealogy are probably better people to advise but the 'mistakes' mine found were things which really wouldnt have mattered. Bits of programs that hadnt completely been deleted, that sort of thing. Talking of which, now my puter is up and running I better download the free CCleaner - have you done that one, the first time I used it my pc was going so slow and it took about 15 minutes to sort out all the rubbish like bits of unused progs and such. The pc fairly whipped along then. But make sure you use the option to save any cookies and passwords you want to keep.

Hi Heather yes that one. No particular problem, but upgraded adaware and it suggested the Registry one so tried it! says I have 700 probs. So thought I would ask others first. Shall not bother with it based on what you have said above. Thankyou.

Is this where it scans free and then tells you you have three million errors in your registry but they will sort it if you subscribe? I did buy a download of Registry Mechanic but I dont know if they are much cop. The pc mechanic told me those type of programs can cause you more grief than help if you arent too savvy. Do you have a particular problem with your puter?
