Hi there, I have just got started on my family tree and have absolutely no idea what I am doing :-p My family is very mixed and has many step family members, as well as half siblings etc. How do I add them to my family tree? For example, I have children from a prior relationship but when I add them to my tree, they come up as being from my current marriage. Did that make sense? |

Michelle, You have to add any children under their father's name, not yours. Rose |

Hi Michelle, If you are talking about your tree on here, you have to add another partner/wife/husband and then add the children to that relationship. They will then show up with the correct parents. If you don't want to put in a name, just put unknown unknown in the name box. Hope I've explained that ok! Sue |

Hi Michelle..... You may save your sanity by not initially using GR to make your tree. If you use a commercial family history program, they are far more flexible as to adding relationships correctly etc. GR has a huge number of idiosyncrasies, set to drive you crazy! There are various free programs you can download to add your tree information to, and some that are very cheap to buy as well (the most popular being Family Tree Maker). I don't know a great deal about the different programs (as I've used the same one for years), so will leave that to others to suggest. Once you have got your tree on your home program you can upload it to GR in one go and this avoids the problems encountered when trying to load people one at a time to this site! (In any case, it's very important to have your tree in more than one place and also to have a backup of all the information. As your tree gets bigger, you wouldn't want to lose it all due to some computer hiccup!) Good Luck! Merry |
