Well then, so what you need is Mary junior's baptism record, and that will give you her father's name, and then you will be able to look for the marriage between her parents to find out her mother's maiden name. Kate.

Kate Her daughter (Also Mary Channer) married Francis Fleet in 1828, so I can't get their marriage cert but that means Mary senior didn't remarry. Margaret there is a Mary Channer of the right age living in Chesham in 1851, she doesn't appear in Chesham on the 1841 so could it by the one I am looking for ? Although why say on 1841 born out of county ?? Thanks Joan

Okay, it looks as though the cross means somebody in a household who is not part of the nuclear family (well, has a different surname from the head of household, anyway). The big tick on the right is for end of household. The little ticks are for 'not born in county' entries. So Mary qualifies for a cross, a big tick and a little tick, which is what she has, and it is just by chance that the combination of cross and little tick looks like a 'Y'. This means that she was born in England or Wales but not in Buckinghamshire. Unfortunately she is one of those mystery widows where all you have is her first name and her husband's surname, and so it is very difficult to find out her maiden name. I suppose you could see if a Mary Fleet married a Mr. Channer at all? In which case she could be Francis's mother remarried. Also, if you can find out Mary junior's maiden name (Francis's wife, presumably) - perhaps Mary Channer was her mother? Possibly remarried, if Mary jr's maiden name is not Channer. Got to go to bed now! Night night, Kate.

Right, perhaps I should have mentioned that the last column was supposed to contain 'S' for Scotland, 'I' for Ireland or 'F' for 'Foreign Parts'. Unfortunately it has been used for ticking and also there are some crosses. I'm not sure if there is actually a 'Y' in the column, or if it is a cross over a little tick (there is also a big tick next to it.) Could possibly be an 'I' for Ireland with a cross over it, though. Mind you, you are quite lucky that there is that 'Widow' crossed out, because you don't usually get the marital status at all on the 1841. I will get back to you if I can figure out what the crosses and ticks signify on these pages.... Kate.

Mary has 'No' for whether born in the county... and 'Y' in the column..'Whether born in Scotland, Ireland or foreign parts' so you need to search for her beyond England and Wales. Gwyn

I'm guessing that they are tick marks to show that the person processing the forms had counted them as 'born out of county'? The last column only needed to be filled in for Scotland, Ireland or 'Foreign Parts' so I guess it was mostly used for ticking off like the disability column was on later censuses. Kate.

Can anyone tell me what I should be looking for in the last box on 1841 census when it says 'No' to born in county as all I can see are little dashes or lines, what do they mean ?? Thanks :0) Joan
