can I just point out, for WW11 records it has to be the next of kin applying for the records. If your grandparent's children are still alive, they have to apply or give written permission for you to do so. Also, you will need copies of birth and death certificates to prove your relationship.

You can look at this site which has addresses to send off for army records. There is quite a wait (months) and it costs £25 to £30 for the records, but they send you photocopies of all the records they have on your ancestor. http://www.army.mod.uk/contacts/divisions/records.htm This site gives details of obtaining RAF records (also £30) http://www.raf.mod.uk/info/faqs_2.html As long as you have full name, rank and number that should be fine. Me again with another beginner's question!! My grandad was in the Air Force and my nannan was in the army. On their marriage certificate it has their 'corporal' and 'private' numbers, and I just wondered if anyone can offer any advice about how I can use these to find info about what they did and where they went during their time in the forces as very little is known. Corporal Arthur James Bell no 553332 RAF Private Audrey Ida Fearn Private 194284 A.T.S Any tips at all will be gratefully received. Thanks
