Are professional geneaolgists worth the money?

Before anyone asks why I'd want to hire one, it's not for a shortcut becasue like everyone else here, I love the search. However also like most people, I have hit a brick wall when it comes to the Irish lines of my family. I have an unusual surname to trace (Teevan) which goes back to Fermanagh and Cavan (with a couple of Dublin strays). I don't mind visiting Dublin to do some of the work but many of the records will just be in PRONI in Belfast, and I can't do both. So what's everyone's views on geneaolgists? I have found at least 27 early baptismal records in Cavan, but the Cavan Geneaology Centre quoted me 25 Euros for each one!!! So presumably it would be cheaper to hire someone to go photocopy them? But can people who charge by the hour be trusted to do the job quickly? Thoughts please!

It's a bit like trying to find a builder. There are loads in the phonebook but how do you know if they are any good? There must be some assocciation that only accepts members, and have codes of practice etc but would membership gaurantee a good researcher? And would you have any comeback? One thing i would ask myself is 'how could i verify the info is correct?' It's almost like accepting info from another tree here, how accurate is it? Glen

Julie, I'd appreciate any help at all! I have got my line back to Terence Teevan and Elizabeth Walsh/Walter/Wallis who had John in Anah, Ballyhaise, Cavan in 1834; James in 1839 and Mary unknown date - presumably all born in the same place. Having said that, there's not many Teevan's so I'm just collecting all available records - they are all related and I really want to prove it somehow. So if you come across ANY at all it would be a great help! Incidentally, there are variations of course - Teeven, Teevin, Tevin etc.

I've just been trawling eBay for bargains. There seem to be swarms of them ready to take your money for doing not a lot more than we're doing for the love of it (?I think?).

Hiya are the records ok for you, would you like me to look for the variants???? Julie

Frances

Frances Report 22 Jul 2006 20:23

Yeah, if you could Julie, thanks! And as for ebay - I don't think I'd trust them - I would probably go through a professional body. I just don't know whether it would work out at the same cost as the 25 euros per record. Ireland must make a fortune from family tree stuff!!

That's great, thanks. There's a couple of names there I recognise and the Teevan/Noble match was one I didn't have a date for. Thanks for all your help, the GR community is great!
