There was an article in The Daily Mail on Thursday which would probably be of interest to most of us but some of the names & photos may be someones rellies The article is entitled Victorian 'hoodies' truly deserved a hug Flat-cap Hoodies. Their crimes? Pitiful, when compared to today’s teen gangs. Their punishment? Barbaric beatings. By GLENYS ROBERTS, Daily Mail There were 6 pictures published in the Mail showing them with a plaque stating the crime they committed and their name:- George Sayers Larceny George Carrington Larceny Aged 9 in 1899 Joseph Oxley Housebreaking Aged 11 in 1897 William Pugh Larceny Henry Stephenson Aged 12 in 1873 Emma Kelly Larceny Other names under the photos were:- Emma Sayers (mother 0f George) Thomas Scurr David Gavin Thomas Codling Stanley Oxley Anthony Shuttleworth Michael Fisher Alfred Enley Francis Dixon Mary Wardle Jane Gargett Here is a link to the article http://www*dailymail*co*uk/pages/live/articles/news/newscomment.html?in_article_id=396641&in_page_id=1787&in_page_id=1787&expand=true#StartComments Remove *** Apparently some records were being disposed of when the police were changing buildings and a detective named Ken Banks of North Shields rescued them and gave them to a local historian. The article says there are 300 stories and possible photos. The main article is online but only one photo. Most of the cases seem to be from Newcastle/North Shields and surrounding areas. If you recognise any of the names you could probably contact the local historian or Ken Banks via the Daily Mail I know its sad to read but I do hope someone claims some of these ancestors. Yvonne |
