I am trying to find Great Great Grandparents in London/Middlesex. I know that all of their children were born there betwwen 1836 and 1848. I have birth/marriage/death certificates for most of them showing them living in Hackney area of London, BUT they do not appear anywhere on any of the censuses from 1841 up until I find the children grown up and married. Why would they not appear on any censuses while they were growing up? Any help please.

Some names would give us something to go on. Jennifer

Post some names and we can have a look. Sometimes though when you search, less is more. If you put too much down as your search criteria you will miss possible matches. If you put John Smith b.1820 Clerkenwell, he might be recorded as John Smith b.1820 London,Middlesex, and you won't get every result. It's usually a mistranscribed name that causes most problems. The spelling may be slightly different, for instance Lyon may be transcribed as Lyons. Glen

Thank you Jennifer and Glen, for your replies. I never added names because it says on this messageboard that 'trying to find messages will be removed' so I was worried about putting names here. I will post the same question (plus names) on the trying to find messageboard.

Trying to find refers to trying to trace living people, not dead ones. London rellies are often difficult because they may say just London or Middlesex as place of birth, or put different but adjacent areas, such as Clerkenwell/Holborn/St Lukes/Cripplegate as the mood took them. nell

My Ancestors were George Lewis Jaques Married Ephraimana Heywood. They had at least 3 children Georgeana Emily Jaques 1836, George Jaques 1837 and Millicent Elizabeth 1848, all born in St Luke district Middlesex. I can't understand why none of them appear on any census records until the children are grown up and married. I have no definite information on George Lewis Jaques, except that he was a Cabinet Maker. Unless I find a census record, I cannot find out his date of birth/age. It is George Lewis Jaques who I am trying to trace.

Thank you all very much, for trying to help me. I do know that George Lewis Jaques senior was a Cabinet Maker. In 1852 he lived in Pool Terrace, Saint Luke, Middlesex. This address appears on his daughter Georgeana Emily's marriage certificate. She was only 16 when she married!! I just can't understand how they do not appear on any census forms.

Have you tried alternative spellings like Jakes?

Glen In Tinsel Knickers

Glen In Tinsel Knickers Report 25 Jul 2006 23:43

I would suspect that there will be mis-spellings of the name. Jacques/Jaques/Jakes are all possibles. If someone said the name was Dixon, you might automatically spell it is Dixon, but it might be Dickson, same name, same sound, different in the index! Often it pays to try with christian name only, but London rellies are a bit more awkward, just because more folks came from London than anywhere else. Glen
