Omdurman was the last great cavalry charge of the British army. Winson Churchill was in the thick of it and wrote about it in his memoirs. The battle was featured in the film 'Young Winston'. |

thanks Chris and Ann! I've had this with another of the brothers too! Family story was that he died in 1916, on his way home on leave, when his ship was blown up. WRONG !! Found out last year that he died in 1915 in a tiny place in northern France, 'on the line of march' - not even in battle. Another of the brothers apparently won the MC and was presented with it at Buck Pal by George V - but I haven't found any evidence yet! Off to Kew soon, so I hope to be able to find out what REALLY happened to all 8 of the brothers. I may be there some time lol. Thanks again! Maz. XX |

Hi, The only Battle of Omdurman that is recorded was during the Sudan Wars in 1898 when Kitchener's Army defeated the Mad Mahdi. Not one during the First World War, that I can discover! Regards Chris |

Can anyone tell me whether there was a Battle of Omdurman in WW1 please. The only one I can find was in 1898. I think it's the one Corporal Jones was always on about in dad's army - 'they don't like it up 'em' lol !! Family tale says one of gt grandad's brothers died there in a cavalry charge, but when another brother died in 1916 he is listed as one of the next of kin! Thanks. Maz. XX |
